In the market of AI agents, the two most discussed open-source systems are OpenClaw and Hermes Agent. Each serves its purpose. Let’s explore how they differ and which business scenarios they are suitable for.
In short: you don’t necessarily have to choose between them. Neural employees can work in conjunction with both OpenClaw and Hermes, as well as with other AI systems. More details can be found in the article “AI agents that complement NEURAL EMPLOYEES”.
What it is: an open-source framework (Apache 2.0) for managing AI agents. Works through a single Gateway — hub-and-spoke architecture.
Strengths:
Who it is suitable for: businesses where an AI agent needs to work across multiple channels, collect data from external systems, perform regular tasks, and assist sales, marketing, or support teams.
Cost: Open Source — free. Official cloud hosting — $59/month. LLM API expenses — $20–200/month depending on load and model.
What it is: an open-source framework (MIT) from Nous Research. An agent that learns on its own — creates skills from its own experience rather than waiting for a developer to write them.
Strengths:
Who it is suitable for: businesses needing an agent that independently understands tasks, remembers context, conducts research, and becomes smarter without constant manual adjustments.
Cost: Open Source — free. VPS — $5–25/month, LLM API — $6–80/month.
OpenClaw and Hermes are not competitors — they solve different tasks. OpenClaw is about multi-channelity and control. Hermes is about self-learning and memory.
If you have a business where AI works with customers across multiple channels and needs to self-learn from conversation history — you need both systems working together. As a developer, I ensure their mutual compatibility so they can communicate with each other and work collaboratively.
But OpenClaw and Hermes are just two of many AI systems. Neural employees can integrate any of them. How this works in practice will be covered in the following articles:
